What is a clan?

If you are unsure what a word means, the best place to start is usually a dictionary. While this may sound stupid, it actually helps a lot in defining the word. There are multiple definitions, but the one we are looking for is:

1. A tribe or collection of families, united under a chieftain, regarded as having the same common ancestor, and bearing the same surname; as, the clan of Macdonald
2. A clique; a sect, society, or body of persons; esp., a body of persons united by some common interest or pursuit

This is almost adequate in explaining what Clans on Battle.net are, the only thing lacking in the dictionary definition is the fact that Battle.net Clans play games together. My personal definition for a Battle.net Clan is:

An organization dedicated to the playing of Battle.net games

Note that there is no difference between a Battle.net Guild and a Clan, other than their preference on either word.

Some people argue that the only real clans on Battle.net are those registered using WarCraft 3, and even go as far as calling their clans "official". Both claims are false. Whether or not I register my organization with a certain institution does not deny the fact that my organization exists and does what it was meant for. Nor does the usage of a tool provided by a company mean that that company endorses your organization.
